What a letter of wishes is
It sits alongside your will. Your will is the legal document that says who inherits. Your letter of wishes is the warmer companion to it — your reasons, your guidance, and your messages to the people you love.
⚠
One honest thing to know. A letter of wishes is not legally binding — it can't override your will. What it does is guide the people you trust. Where your will gives your executors or trustees a choice to make on their own (for example, a discretionary trust that lets them decide how to help your family over time), your letter tells them how you'd hope they'll use that choice. They should follow your guidance, even though the law doesn't force them to.

Dear Paul
To Paul Richards
"Paul, the Hornby R3456 was the first engine your grandfather bought me. It was 1987, we were at the Swansea model railway exhibition, and he said 'every collection needs a King Arthur'..."

Dear Sarah
To Sarah Richards
"Sarah, I know you've never been interested in the trains, and that's fine — I'm glad you found your music. The Gibson is yours because I remember you learning 'Blackbird' in the living room..."

A word for my executors
"If there's ever a choice to make about the trust, please lean towards helping the grandchildren with education first. Margaret knows my mind on this — trust her judgement..."

Looking after Biscuit
To Paul Richards
"Biscuit has been my best friend for six years. He's nervous around new people but once he trusts you, he's the most loyal dog you'll ever meet. Please keep his routine..."

A video for Margaret
To Margaret Richards
"Some things are easier said out loud. A two-minute video, recorded one Sunday afternoon — just me, in the armchair, telling her the things I never quite managed to say."

Write a new wish
Who you'd like to receive what — and why
A gentle summary, person by person. The "why" is the part your family will treasure most. None of this changes your will — it's the story behind it.

Your wishes, your timing. You decide whether each message is shared with your family now — so it's never a surprise — or kept private until it's needed. You can change your mind any time. And you will never be charged automatically: recording your wishes here is free, and always will be.
That's plenty for today if you'd like to stop. Everything you've written is saved and safe. There's no deadline and nothing left hanging.
