Model Railway Collection

A lifetime's OO-gauge collection — locomotives, rolling stock and a layout, valued together. Worth a good deal of money. Loved by David. And, honestly, wanted by no one.

What's in it Verified by INHERIT

Each item is catalogued with its own photo, condition and value. Here are six of the headline pieces — the flagship Flying Scotsman and the matched diesel rake that give the collection its value.

A collection can be worth more — or less — than its parts. Kept together, the flagship Flying Scotsman and the matched diesel rake fetch a small set premium from a specialist buyer. Broken up to share out, the rare pieces lose their context and usually sell for less. We show both numbers so the choice below is an honest one.

What to do with it

Three honest routes — with indicative figures. You choose; we record the family's decision.

Disposition options INHERIT decision-support

When nobody wants to keep an item, MFI doesn't pretend otherwise. We lay out the realistic routes and what each is likely to leave the family — net of fees.

Most likely value

Specialist auction

Sold as one lot through a specialist model-railway auction. Keeps the set premium; the auctioneer handles the appraisal and the buyers.

£20,400
est. net to the estate · after ~15% commission on a £24,000 hammer

Donate to a museum

Gifted whole to a heritage railway or model museum — David's name on the collection. No money to the family, but the collection stays together and is seen.

£0
to the family · may reduce Inheritance Tax if to a registered charity

Keep one piece · sell the rest

Each of the three keeps one loco as a keepsake (e.g. the "Evening Star"); the remaining 59 items go to specialist auction.

£18,900
est. net · keepsakes set aside, broken set sells nearer the item total

Where the money goes INHERIT residue routing

If the collection is sold, the proceeds don't disappear — they flow into the residue of David's estate and are split between the three beneficiaries, exactly as the rest of the estate is.

Nobody has to feel guilty. Choosing to sell something you can't keep is a perfectly loving decision — it turns David's careful collecting into something each of you can use. The collection will be sold with care, by people who know what it is.

The family's decision INHERIT record

Once you agree, MFI records the decision against the collection — so the executor knows exactly what was wanted, and why.

This collection & tax

Counts toward David's estate+ £24,000
Capital Gains Tax on deathNone
Model railways are personal chattels, so there's no Capital Gains Tax when they pass on death or are sold by the estate. HMRC may value associated items as a set — which is why the £24,000 set value is used here, not the £22,100 item-by-item total. If the collection were donated to a registered charity instead, that gift could reduce the estate's Inheritance Tax.

Valuation is an estimate based on item values and comparable whole-collection sales — not a formal insurance or probate valuation. Net figures assume an illustrative specialist-auction commission and may differ in practice. Tax figures are guidance computed against the INHERIT England & Wales rules, shown for planning only — they are not tax or legal advice; a qualified adviser should confirm anything you act on. Built on INHERIT v2

This demo is built on INHERIT v2 — an open standard for describing an estate. We show you honestly which parts of this screen the standard can hold today, which are planned, and which are still gaps.

  • Supported now1 entriesThe standard already has a place for this today.
  • Supported now · shared core2 entriesSupported by the part of the standard shared across our brands.
  • Planned3 entriesA change proposal covers this. Where we can check the standard’s own record, we show its status.
  • Gap — needs planning0 entriesOn the screen, but no change proposal covers it yet. These still need planning.

Each entry comes from either the screen’s feature list or the data the screen displays. The two traces overlap, so one feature can appear twice: these are entries, not a count of distinct features.

The 30 change proposals this demo relies on

A change proposal (ICP) is a tracked request to extend the standard. These are the ones behind the “Planned” features across all 32 screens — and the few already adopted and built. Where the standard has a written proposal we show its status from the standard’s own record; where it does not, we say so rather than guess.
